Why your microphone isn't working (common fixes)
If your microphone isn’t detected or isn’t working, you’re not alone. Here are the most common causes and how to fix them:
- Blocked permissions: Make sure your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) has permission to access the microphone. Click the lock icon next to the URL and select “Allow microphone”.
- Wrong microphone selected: Go to Settings > Sound > Input and verify the correct microphone is active. If you’re using a headset or webcam, make sure it’s not selected by mistake.
- Driver issues: On Windows, open Device Manager, find your microphone, right-click, and select “Update driver”.
- Browser problems: Try a different browser. If it works there, restart your current browser or clear its cache.
Mic not detected? Check browse permissions

Step 1: Allow microphone access
When you open the page, your browser will ask for permission to use your microphone.
Click “Allow while visiting the site” so the test can detect your device and start listening.
If you click “Never allow,” the test won’t work.
Step 2: Check your active microphone
In the permission window, make sure the correct microphone is selected in the dropdown menu.
You’ll see your device name (for example, Micrófono (CORSAIR HS65 SURROUND USB Adapter).
If you use a headset, external mic, or USB adapter, confirm that it’s the one chosen.

Step 3: Switch to another microphone if needed
If your computer has several input devices, click the dropdown arrow to see all available microphones.
Choose the one you want to test — for example, your USB mic or your built-in laptop mic.
Once selected, click “Allow” and start speaking to see the sound waves move on screen.
Low audio quality? Try these settings
Weak, noisy, or distorted audio can ruin your calls. These simple settings will improve your audio quality in seconds:
- Get closer to the mic: Stay 15–20 cm away for clear, natural voice capture without distortion.
- Avoid noisy backgrounds: Close windows, turn off fans, or record in a quiet room.
- Turn off automatic noise reduction: In Windows or macOS, disable “Noise Suppression” in audio settings—it often makes your voice sound distant.
- Use a better microphone: If you’re using your laptop’s built-in mic, consider upgrading to a USB mic like the Audio-Technica AT2020 or Samson Q2U.
- Use audio enhancement software: Try Audacity (free) to remove background noise and normalize volume levels.
